Very interesting. I personally really enjoy Mark Driscoll, and am very excited about the work God is doing through him and Mars Hill out there. With the few connections I have with people out in that part of the US, I have heard 1st hand how people out there are very resistant to the Gospel. So it’s exciting that thousands of people are being drawn there, and they’re hearing sermons that preach the Truth. Yeah, he may cross the line at times, but I do appreciate that he at least will attempt to address issues that most churches are afraid to address. What’s also cool is if you listen to his sermons from 3 or 4 year ago, and work your way up to present day, you really can note how God is refining him, because his tongue is being more and more tamed.
One thing that frustrates me with these types of articles and videos is how, in order to stir the pot, they’ll take some of his comments out of context. For example, they showed the clip of him discussing masturbation, and that guy quoting Ecclesiastes 9:10: “whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” But if you heard that comment in context you would hear how Mark goes on to explain how that guy was taking that verse out of context, and Mark turns to Jesus’ teachings on how mental lusting is sinful, and therefore masturbation is wrong. So things like that are kind of annoying, because the message ends up being distorted.
