Christian Joy

Thursday, December 4, 2008

This morning we were privileged to hear a Bible study taught by Mr. Ron Diegel. He’s a lawyer for a day job. His lesson was on Christian Joy. I will not provide every detail of his message but I will provide the points. He had many, many Scripture references which I will not provide but wanted to advise the reader that he directed every point back to a Scripture text.

He started in I Thessalonians 5:16-18 and provided a definition of joy which he heard years ago. The definition of joy which he provided was

Joy = a “deep settled confidence that God is in perfect control of everything for His glory and our good”

Our source of joy is not natural, it is supernatural.

Why be joyful?

  • joy is a proper response to the character of God
  • joy is a proper act for the appreciation of the work of Christ
  • joy comes from the Holy Spirit
  • blessed with all Spiritual blessings in the heavenly places
  • an act of proper response to divine providence
  • proper response to the promise of future glory
  • proper act of appreciation for answered prayer
  • an act of appreciation for the Scriptures
  • proper response to blessings of Christian fellowship

Obstacles to joy

  • not saved
  • temptation/anxiety
  • false expectations (believing you deserve more than you are getting
  • prayerlessness
  • operating by feelings

Again, he had other great points in the talk. He had great Scripture references. He was great to listen to and sit under and learn.
